Watering
Very late evenings or very early mornings are best for watering.  It allows the water to soak into the soil for use later in the day.  You should water on a regular schedule, with uniform coverage for 20 to 60 minute intervals.

Cut Grass Higher
Taller grass has several benefits.  A larger mass of grass blades makes the grass look greener overall and hides problem spots.  The extra green on top delivers more nutrients to the grass’ roots and helps them grow deep, this means its more drought tolerant and has access to better soil nutrients.  The thicker root mass and the taller grass helps crowd out weed seeds.  It is the most effective and inexpensive control of crabgrass.  Taller grass will keep the sun off the soil, helping to preserve its water content and reduce your water bill.

Mulch your grass clippings
Grass clippings are 10% nitrogen, and nitrogen is a main component of fertilizers.  A seasons worth of grass clippings will contribute almost 2 lbs of nitrogen per 1,000 Sq. feet of soil – half of the lawn’s annual fertilizer needs.  This is the most cost effective way of feeding your lawn.

In addition, mulched grass clippings shade the surface of the soil and make it harder for weeds to germinate. These freshly mulched grass clippings are a feast for earthworms, who are instrumental in breaking down thatch and aerating soil.

Aerate Annually
Aeration involves putting a series of small holes in a lawn, which benefits the grass by giving the roots and soil access to air and water.  It will increase your root growth while decreasing water evaporation.

Aerate on a regular basis – no less than once a year, no more than three times a year.  Spring, Summer and Fall are all great times to Aerate.  You can maximize aeration by preparing the ground with a thorough watering.   Fertilizing after aeration will optimize the benefits by creating thousand of holding bins that retain the fertilizer up to three times longer.  This will save money and produce a more beautiful and valuable lawn.

Fertilizing
Whenever possible, use fertilizers made from a broad range of nutrients.  To use a straight mix is only a good idea when a soil analysis has proved the lawn is deficient in that specific nutrient.  But since soil analysis is not always easy to obtain, using a broad range fertilizer has a good chance of providing what is missing.

Apply small amounts of fertilizer on a regular basis rather than large amounts only once in a while.

De-Thatching
Grass produces thatch as a layer to protect its roots from exposure to elements such as direct sunlight, wind, and people and animals walking across it.  The problem is that grass does not know when to stop producing thatch.   When thatch become ½ inch to 1 ½ inches thick it is time to have it removed.   This should be done once a year or as needed to keep your grass healthy.  Most lawns can be Thatched/Power Raked at any time of the year.
